When equal splits beat AI clip finding

AI Shorts search for hook-worthy moments inside speech and scenes. That is the right tool when you want vertical clips for YouTube Shorts, TikTok, or Reels. Equal Split solves a different problem: you already know the file should be divided into even blocks — a 60-minute webinar into ten six-minute modules, a screen recording into equal study segments, or a long export split for upload limits.

Because Split runs with FFmpeg on your server, it does not consume OpenAI credits or wait on transcript analysis. You pick how many parts (typically 2–20), confirm, and ShortMatic renders each segment as its own MP4 with accurate timestamps.

Use Split when the structure is time-based. Use AI Shorts when the structure is editorial. Many creators use both on the same project: Split for archives and modules, Shorts for social distribution.

How equal Split works in ShortMatic

Open a project video and go to the Split tab in the editor sidebar. Choose the number of equal parts — presets like 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 10, 12, 15, or 20 — or enter a custom count within the allowed range.

ShortMatic calculates duration ÷ parts, builds scene rows for each segment, and processes them on the server. Progress updates while parts render. When finished, each part shows a preview window, start/end timecodes, and individual Download buttons.

For batches, use Download all (ZIP) to fetch every part in one archive — ideal when you are moving files to a CMS, LMS, or client folder. The ZIP name follows your video title so exports stay organized.

Split vs visual scene detection

ShortMatic also offers visual scene detection — useful when cuts should follow camera changes or slide transitions. Equal Split ignores visual boundaries and only respects clock time. That predictability matters for training videos where minute 0–5 must always map to “Part 1.”

Scene detection can propose uneven lengths; equal Split guarantees each part is the same duration (except the last part, which absorbs any rounding remainder from the source file). If you re-run Split with a different part count, previous equal-split scenes are replaced — there is no mixed method on the same analysis row.

Neither mode replaces rights review. Only split and publish footage you own or are licensed to distribute.

Tips for clean exports

Split from the highest-quality master you have — re-splitting a heavily compressed file cannot recover detail.

If speech must not break mid-sentence, equal Split may not be ideal; consider AI scene detection or manual trim in Studio after an approximate Split.

Label parts in your CMS using the sequence numbers ShortMatic shows (Part 1, Part 2, …) so ZIP contents match your publishing order.

After Split, you can still open any part in Studio or send the full video to Long Video to Shorts without re-uploading.
